FAQ
Questions About 2D Lip Sync Studio
Everything you need to know about importing audio, creating lip sync, customizing mouth shapes, editing timing, and getting help.
Getting Started
The Basics
What is 2D Lip Sync Studio?
2D Lip Sync Studio is a focused tool for creating and editing mouth timing for 2D character animation. It helps you synchronize spoken dialogue with a set of mouth shapes without the complexity of a full animation suite.
How does the lip-sync process work?
Import your dialogue audio, enter the words exactly as they are spoken, and sync the audio. 2D Lip Sync Studio aligns the dialogue with speech sounds and creates corresponding mouth changes. You can then review the results and adjust the timing before exporting.
Does 2D Lip Sync Studio create my entire animation?
No. 2D Lip Sync Studio is designed specifically for lip sync. It creates and helps you edit the mouth timing for your character, but it does not replace your illustration or animation software.
What operating systems does 2D Lip Sync Studio support?
2D Lip Sync Studio is currently available for Windows.
Audio & Dialogue
Importing and Syncing
What audio formats can I import?
2D Lip Sync Studio supports WAV, MP3, and M4A audio files. Clear dialogue with minimal background noise will generally make the spoken words easier to work with.
How long can my audio file be?
2D Lip Sync Studio currently supports audio files up to 10 minutes or 250 MB. For the easiest workflow, shorter dialogue clips of about 5 minutes or less are recommended.
Do I need to type the transcript?
Yes. Paste or type the dialogue exactly as it is spoken in the recording. The transcript helps 2D Lip Sync Studio align the spoken words, sounds, and mouth changes.
What happens if I edit the transcript after syncing?
If you change the transcript after the audio has been synchronized, you may need to sync the audio again so the words, sounds, and mouth timing remain aligned.
Characters & Mouth Shapes
Using Your Own Artwork
Can I use my own character artwork?
Yes. You can import a character image into the Preview area, position it, and place the animated mouth over your character while you work.
Can I use my own mouth artwork?
Yes. All 12 mouth positions can be replaced with your own custom PNG artwork so the lip sync matches the style of your character.
Do I have to use or export the mouth images from 2D Lip Sync Studio?
No. The mouth images in 2D Lip Sync Studio can be used as a visual reference while you review and edit the lip sync. If your character already has mouth shapes in your animation software, you can keep using them.
When you're finished editing, export the lip-sync timing data as TXT or DAT and use that data with the mouth shapes already in your animation project. You only need to export mouth images if that suits your particular workflow.
What mouth shapes does 2D Lip Sync Studio use?
2D Lip Sync Studio uses 12 mouth positions:
- Rest / Silence
- A / I
- E
- O
- U / OO
- F / V
- L
- M / P / B
- TH
- CH / J / SH
- R
- S / Z
Do my custom mouth images have to use a particular art style?
No. You can create mouth artwork that matches your own character and animation style. The important thing is that your mouth images are prepared consistently so they align correctly when switched during playback.
Editing & Timing
Fine-Tuning the Result
Can I change the automatically generated mouth timing?
Yes. The generated lip sync is editable. You can review the Dialogue & Mouth Timeline and insert, change, or delete mouth changes when you want more control.
Can I move through the animation frame by frame?
Yes. The unified timeline controls allow you to navigate through frames and mouth changes so you can inspect and fine-tune the timing.
Can I review individual words while checking the lip sync?
Yes. Words in the dialogue timeline can be used to navigate the recording, making it easier to review specific parts of the dialogue.
What formats does 2D Lip Sync Studio export?
2D Lip Sync Studio provides several export options so you can choose the format that fits your animation workflow:
- Generic Mouth Changes (.TXT)
- PNG Sequence (.ZIP)
- Moho / Papagayo / OpenToonz / Tahoma2D (.DAT)
- Toon Boom Harmony Script (.JS)
- Adobe Animate Script (.JSFL)
- MP4 Preview (With Audio)
- Transparent WebM (With Audio)
- Captions / Subtitles (.SRT)
- WebVTT Captions (.VTT)
This means you don't have to export mouth images unless that's the workflow you want. You can export timing data or scripts for supported animation workflows, video previews, image sequences, or caption files.
How can I use the lip sync in my animation software?
You can export the lip-sync timing data as TXT or DAT and use that timing with the mouth shapes already in your animation project. This lets you keep your character's existing artwork and rig in your animation software rather than replacing it with exported mouth images.
If your workflow does use image sequences, 2D Lip Sync Studio can also export numbered PNG mouth images. PNG export is an option, not a requirement.
Processing & Privacy
How the Sync Runs
Does my audio have to be uploaded to an online service to create the lip sync?
No. The word and phoneme alignment used by 2D Lip Sync Studio runs locally on your computer. Your dialogue does not need to be sent to a third-party speech-processing service just to generate the lip sync.
